Shipping Worldwide: How We Get Your Bike to You
We ship DIRTLAB bikes to riders in over 30 countries. Whether you're in California, Switzerland, or Tokyo, our goal is the same: your bike arrives safely, on time, and with no surprise fees at your door. Here's how we make that happen.
DDP: We Handle the Hard Part
All direct-to-consumer orders ship DDP — Delivered Duty Paid. That means the price you see at checkout is the price you pay, period. We pre-calculate and pre-pay all import duties, taxes, and customs fees for your country. You won't get a call from a customs broker asking for money, and there's no invoice from DHL for VAT or duty upon delivery.
This is more complex and more expensive for us to manage, but we believe it's the right way to sell bikes internationally. Nobody should have to research HTS codes and duty rates just to buy a bicycle.
Packaging
Every bike ships in a custom-designed cardboard bike box with closed-cell foam inserts. The frame is wrapped in foam tubing, the wheels are bagged and separated, and all loose components (pedals, tools, documentation) are secured in a separate compartment. The box is reinforced at stress points and strapped to a pallet for freight shipments.
Frame-only orders ship in a smaller reinforced box with custom foam cradles. We've shipped thousands of frames with a damage rate below 0.3%, and we inspect and photograph every shipment before it leaves our facility.
E-Bike Shipping: Dangerous Goods Handling
E-bikes with lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods (DG) for air transport. This requires special packaging, labeling, and documentation — and not all carriers handle DG cargo. We work with DG-certified freight partners who specialize in battery shipments.
The battery ships installed in the frame (UN3481, packed with equipment) which is the safest and most cost-effective method. All DG documentation, including the Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods, is prepared by our certified DG team. DG surcharges typically add $25-45 per unit depending on the destination — this is included in the DDP price you see at checkout.
