Dutch in Taiwan: Why Bikelab Is Built Where It Is

Bikelab is a Taiwanese company run by a Dutch founder. That combination is less accidental than it sounds, and the story behind it is the reason the frames are built the way they are.

The question everyone asks

The question I get most often is some version of: why Taiwan? And the honest answer is that Taiwan was not a romantic choice — it was the correct one once I understood what I was actually looking for.

I grew up in the Netherlands. I have been riding mountain bikes for most of my adult life. At some point that shifted from riding to thinking about why the bikes I was riding were built the way they were — what the geometry decisions meant, why certain linkage paths worked better than others, what the difference actually was between frames that felt right and frames that did not.

Building a frame company in Europe would have been possible. But Taiwan is where precision carbon and CNC manufacturing exists at a scale and quality level that no European market can match. The ecosystem here — the suppliers, the machining shops, the bearing manufacturers, the assembly expertise — is genuinely world-class. It took some time to understand that, and more time to build the relationships that make it work.

What Taiwan manufacturing actually means

When people hear “made in Taiwan” in the context of carbon MTB frames, they sometimes assume it means a large anonymous factory churning out frames for ten different brands simultaneously. That is one version of Taiwan manufacturing. It is not ours.

The carbon layup for the Paratu CP and Iuhu CP comes from a verified Chinese carbon supplier we work with directly. The CNC work — the pivot hardware, dropouts, yoke, link components — is done in Taiwan, where precision machining culture is genuinely different from what you find elsewhere. And the final assembly happens in our workshop in Taichung district, done by hand, one frame at a time.

Hand assembly is not a marketing phrase here. It is literally how the frames are put together. Each frame is assembled individually. That means every joint is checked, every bearing is pressed correctly, every torque spec is applied by someone who is accountable for that specific frame. There is no production line moving frames past stations at fixed intervals.

Why I ride what I build

Rider-owned is a phrase that gets used loosely. In our case it means something specific: I test prototypes. I ride the geometry combinations. The Taichung trails are where the Paratu CP and Iuhu CP geometry was validated — not in a test lab, not on data alone, but on actual terrain by the person who made the geometry decisions.

That matters for a reason beyond brand story. When a customer emails about a geometry question or a setup choice, they are talking to the person who calibrated the flip chip system, confirmed the HTA numbers against the CAD, and rode the frame at every chip position. The information that comes back is not pulled from a product brief — it comes from direct experience with the actual hardware.

How we sell

Bikelab sells directly to consumers through this website. We also sell directly to dealers, and we work with distributors in markets where it makes sense. What we do not have is a mandatory margin layer between us and whoever is buying. Consumers buy at retail. Dealers buy at dealer pricing. Distributors buy at distributor pricing. Every channel has transparent, consistent pricing — no one pays an inflated price because a middleman needed a margin that we did not control.

That model is possible because we are small and direct. It would be harder to maintain at a different scale. At this scale, it is how we prefer to operate.

What comes next

The Paratu CP and Iuhu CP are the current production frames. The EC3 generation — with a 600 Wh in-tube battery on the eMTB — is in pre-order. The geometry platform, the flip chip system, and the reach adjust system are all carrying forward.

The 32” wheel concept is an active R&D direction. We have published the geometry data and the engineering case publicly at dirtlab.com/pages/32-wheel-concept because we think transparency about what we are working on is more useful than keeping it hidden until it is ready to sell.

That is the company. Built in Taiwan, by someone who moved there to build it correctly rather than quickly.
