34.9mm Seatpost: Why We Don't Compromise on This

Both the Paratu CP and Iuhu CP use a 34.9 mm internal diameter seatpost. This is not common in the full-suspension MTB market, where 31.6 mm remains the standard for most frames. There is a specific engineering reason for the choice, and it is worth understanding if you are speccing a dropper or wondering whether an adapter will work.

The structural argument

A seatpost is a cantilevered beam. The rider’s weight acts at the saddle, which sits above the seat collar clamp. The post resists that load in bending. The relevant structural property is the second moment of area — the geometric resistance to bending — and for a hollow tube it scales with the fourth power of the outer diameter.

That fourth-power relationship means small increases in diameter produce large increases in stiffness. A 34.9 mm post is not just marginally stiffer than a 31.6 mm post of the same wall thickness. The difference in bending stiffness is approximately 50% — the 34.9 mm post resists lateral deflection under load roughly one and a half times as effectively.

For a dropper post specifically, this matters for two reasons. First, dropper posts already have an inherent reduction in stiffness compared to solid posts due to the sliding mechanism. Starting with a larger outer diameter partially compensates for that. Second, a heavier rider or a rider who stands hard on the pedals in rough terrain is applying meaningful lateral load to the post on every stroke. The stiffer post is more directly connected to the rider’s inputs.

Why not use a shim?

We do not offer shims for 31.6 mm posts, and we will not recommend them. A shim adapter between a 31.6 mm post and a 34.9 mm seat tube introduces a compliance layer at the most load-critical joint on the post. The whole structural argument for 34.9 mm is undermined if the post is effectively floating inside a sleeve.

Additionally, shims add a failure point. A shim that is slightly out of round, not fully clamped, or loaded asymmetrically can creak, shift, or fail in ways that a direct-fit post does not. The 34.9 mm spec is a hard design decision, not a preference — buy a 34.9 mm dropper and fit it correctly.

Weight

The weight difference between a 31.6 mm and 34.9 mm dropper at the same travel and quality level is small — typically 20–40 g across the products in the confirmed compatibility list. For most riders, this is not a meaningful weight consideration. For riders for whom every gram counts, the structural and feel benefit of the larger post diameter is a reasonable trade.

Confirmed compatible droppers

Both frames use a 34.9 mm internal diameter seat tube. The minimum insertion depths vary by frame size:

  • Size S: minimum 120 mm insertion, maximum 270 mm
  • Size M: minimum 150 mm insertion, maximum 300 mm
  • Size L: minimum 180 mm insertion, maximum 330 mm

The seat tube lengths are S 370 mm, M 400 mm, and L 430 mm. Check the dropper’s minimum insertion depth against your frame size before purchasing. The short version

34.9 mm is stiffer, more direct, and structurally the better choice for a full-suspension frame used in aggressive terrain. We made it a hard spec because we think the compromise of shims is not worth making. Buy the right post for the frame and the post will do its job correctly.
