Maxon BIKEDRIVE Troubleshooter

Step-by-step diagnostics for the most common Maxon BIKEDRIVE AIR S issues. Most problems have a quick fix — start here before contacting support.

Red Error LED is lit

The red error LED almost always means the speed sensor — and 95% of the time a power cycle fixes it.

  1. Hold the POWERTAB power button for 5 seconds (system turns off).
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Short-press the power button to turn back on.
  4. If red light returns → check speed sensor (next section).

Speed sensor check: distance between sensor and magnet must be 1–8 mm (about 2 finger widths). Magnet must pass through ONE sensor line only. Cable must be plugged in at both ends.

No motor support

  1. Is the white Status LED lit? If no → battery dead or connection issue → see Charging Issues below.
  2. Check support level. If 0 bars are lit at the bottom of the POWERTAB, you're in Level 0 (no support). Press + to activate Level I.
  3. Is the red Error LED also lit? If yes → speed sensor issue (see above).
  4. Just finished a long, hard climb? Thermal protection may be active — let the motor cool 20–30 minutes before riding hard again.
  5. If none of the above → contact an authorised dealer.

Battery won’t charge

  1. Check the charger LED. Green = standby (not connected to bike); Red = charging (normal); No light = power issue (check outlet + cable).
  2. Check temperature. Battery only charges between 0 °C and 45 °C (BX250I main) / 0 °C and 50 °C (BX250E range extender). If too hot or too cold, move bike to room temperature (10–20 °C ideal) and wait 30–60 min.
  3. Check connection. Bayonet lock rotated to secure? Charging port cover removed? Connectors clean and dry?
  4. Connector wet? Dry thoroughly with a cloth, wait until completely dry before reconnecting.

Range Extender not detected

  1. Press the button on your Range Extender. You should see a green LED. If no light → Range Extender is off or empty (charge it first).
  2. Check the cable. Bayonet locks engaged at BOTH ends (bike + Range Extender)?
  3. Check the POWERTAB. Green LED at the top = Range Extender connected and charging main battery.
  4. Range Extender LED is RED → power cycle (hold button 5 sec, wait, turn back on). If still red → contact dealer.
  5. Main battery at 100%? Range Extender won’t charge if main is full — that’s normal.

Safety: a loose Range Extender cable can get caught in the wheel. Always verify it’s secured with the rubber band before riding.

After an accident

For your safety, do NOT ride if any of these are true:

  • Cables visibly damaged
  • Motor housing cracked or dented
  • Battery area damaged
  • Bike won’t turn on or shows unusual behaviour

Contact an authorised dealer for a safety inspection. Electrical damage isn’t always visible.
