Maxon Range Extender — Install & Use

Doubling your range. The BX250E adds 250 Wh in a bottle-cage-mounted pack that hot-swaps in the field.

How it works

  • Acts like a portable power bank — automatically charges your main battery while you ride.
  • 650 Wh combined capacity (400 Wh main + 250 Wh range extender).
  • Hot-swappable mid-ride — carry a second extender for very long rides and swap without tools.
  • Mounts on a standard bottle-cage location with the Maxon-compatible bracket.

Connect for the first time

  1. Mount the Range Extender on the bottle-cage bracket. The retention rubber band must be in place — a loose extender can fall during a ride and the cable can get caught in the wheel.
  2. Open the charging port covers on both the bike and the extender.
  3. Connect the cable at both ends. Rotate each bayonet lock until it “clicks”.
  4. Press the Range Extender button. Green LED on the extender = on. Green LED at the top of POWERTAB = system has detected it.
  5. Both green LEDs steady = charging your main battery. You’re ready to ride.

Safety: never ride with a loose cable. Verify both bayonet locks are engaged AND the rubber band is secured before every ride.

LED reference (Range Extender)

LED Meaning Action
Green steady Connected, charging main battery Normal.
Green flashing Range Extender on, but not detected by bike Check both bayonet locks.
Red Range Extender error Power-cycle: hold button 5 sec, wait 10 sec, press to turn back on. If persists → dealer.
Amber Charging by external charger (extender being topped up) Normal.
No LED Off or empty Press button — should see 5 white SOC bars. If empty, charge.

SOC display (5 bars)

Press the button on the Range Extender briefly to see its current charge — 5 white LEDs in 20% increments. Press again to wake the system; auto-sleeps after a few seconds.

Tips for getting the most out of it

  • Connect at the START of the ride. The extender will keep your main battery topped up the whole way — much better than waiting until main is half-empty.
  • Carry a spare for ultra-distance rides. Hot-swap in seconds during a break.
  • Check both SOCs — POWERTAB shows main battery (7 bars), Range Extender button shows extender (5 bars).
  • Charging stops automatically when the main battery hits 100%. That’s normal, not a fault.

Cable cross-compatibility — important

The same BX250E battery cell is used on Maxon AIR and AIR S systems, but the cables are different. An AIR-system Range Extender is NOT cross-compatible with an AIR S system — sockets differ. If you order a Range Extender separately, verify the cable matches your bike system. Wrong cable = re-ship cost and delay.
