Maxon Battery Care & Range Optimisation

Get more range out of every ride and extend your battery’s life. Two batteries, simple rules.

Range by support level

Level Main battery (400 Wh) + Range extender (650 Wh combined) Best for
Level 0 Unlimited (no assist) Unlimited Descents, flats, training.
Level I Long-range, gentle assist Almost double Long distance, mellow trails.
Level II Balanced Significantly extended Mixed terrain, the do-everything mode.
Level III Maximum power, shorter range Significantly extended Steep climbs, technical pitches.

Real-world range varies with rider weight, terrain, tyre pressure, wind, temperature, and how often you change levels. The numbers above are guidance, not promises. Use the Range Calculator for a closer estimate.

10 ways to maximise range

  1. Start in Level I. Increase only when you need it.
  2. Drop to Level 0 on descents. No support is needed going downhill.
  3. Anticipate climbs. Shift to a lower gear before the hill, not on it.
  4. Connect Range Extender at the START of the ride. It charges the main battery throughout, keeping main fuller.
  5. Check tyre pressure. Properly inflated tyres = less rolling resistance.
  6. Pedal smoothly. Avoid stamping. Smooth circles = efficient power.
  7. Custom app settings. Lower the power ceiling on Level II / III via the BIKEDRIVE Connect app.
  8. Use the right gear. Don’t fight the motor.
  9. Battery temperature. Keep between 10–20 °C for best performance.
  10. Plan your route. Save battery for the hardest sections.

Storage — the rules that extend battery life

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time. The two biggest accelerators are storing at extreme charge levels and storing in heat.

  • Storage charge: ~60% (4 bars on POWERTAB). Never store fully charged or fully empty.
  • Storage temperature: 10–20 °C (50–68 °F). Avoid hot garages, direct sun, and freezing.
  • Long-term storage (>1 month): check every 6 months, recharge to 60% if it’s dropped below 4 bars.
  • Daily use: charge to 60–80% rather than always 100%. Avoid running below 1–2 bars.

Typical lifespan: 500–1000 charge cycles, or 3–7 years depending on use. When range starts dropping noticeably or charging takes much longer, the battery is aging — replacement is a normal consumable expense.

What kills batteries (do not do)

  • Storing at 0% or 100% for extended periods
  • Storing above 30 °C
  • Constant high-power use with no recovery
  • Deep discharges every ride
  • Leaving in a hot car (>60 °C damages the battery)
  • Pressure-washing or submerging
